Insurance Terminology

Co-insurance: The share of your covered expenses (usually a percentage) you must pay after the deductible is reached. For example, a policy may require you to pay 20% of the cost of the services you receive up to a certain dollar amount.

Co-payment: A specified dollar amount you pay when you see a doctor or use outpatient services. This is paid to the provider at the time of service. Your co-payment is determined by your insurance plan.

Deductible: The initial amount of expenses you will have to pay before benefits are covered under your policy.

Medicaid/medical assistance: A government program that provides healthcare coverage for low-income individuals and families.

Pre-admission certification/prior authorization: A written approval from your insurance provider that certain services provided by the hospital will be covered by your health plan.
