An Alternative to Surgical Treatment
Interventional Radiology (IR) specializies in minimally invasive imaging treatments performed using x-rays, CT, or ultrasound for guidance. IR offers an alternative to surgical treatment of many conditions and can eliminate the need for lengthy hospital stays in some cases.
Some of the IR procedures done at Trinity are:
Angiogram (Angiography) - an x-ray of the arteries or veins other than the heart to detect blockages or narrowing of the blood vessels. In many cases these can be treated with balloon or stent (metal sleeves to open the blocked artery). Angiograms of the heart are done in the Cardiac Cath Lab.
Needle Biopsies - a tiny needle that is inserted into an abnormal area in almost any part of the body using medical imaging (x-ray, CT, Ultrasound) to obtain a tissue biopsy to be used for laboratory analysis. This can provide a diagnosis without surgery.
Blood Clot Filters - a small filter inserted into a vein in the abdomen to help catch and break up clots.
Catheter Insertions - catheters inserted into large veins for chemotherapy, nutritional support, blood drains and hemodialysis (kidney failure).
Dialysis Maintenance and Access - to image fistulas inset short/long dialysis catheters for hemodialysis. Fistulas can also become blocked and can be treated with balloons to open blocked veins.
