Comprehensive Treatment Program for Those with Low Bone Density

Osteoporosis is a disease which causes bones to weaken and fracture. Most often, these fractures happen at the hip, spine and wrist. There are many factors that can lead to osteoporosis; many of them are modifiable. Those who are taking long-term steroids, smoke or do not consume enough calcium are at higher risk to develop osteoporosis.

Other factors include:

  • Increased age

  • Being a woman

  • Family history

  • Menopause

  • Diet, medications

  • Sedentary lifestyle

Identifying osteoporosis is best done with a DEXA scan available at the Women's Center across from Trinity Regional Medical Center. This test gives a bone density score which determines the level of bone loss. In addition to medication and dietary changes, exercise can be helpful in preventing bone loss and even help increase bone density.

Highland Park Center offers a comprehensive treatment program for those with low bone density. Resistance and postural exercises, balance training and proper body mechanics instruction are components of our program. A physician referral is needed to start the program.
