Improving Patients’ Ability to Return Home

Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and the third-leading cause of adult deaths. More than 750,000 strokes occur each year in the United States. The good news is that the majority of people survive strokes.

Individual therapy programs are designed to treat problems caused by stroke including but not limited to:

• Paralysis

• Speech/language difficulties

• Swallowing problems

• Visual changes

• Thinking and memory problems

Therapy focuses on helping each person reach individual therapy goals and on improving the patients’ ability to return to and remain safely in their home.

Interventions may include:

• Self care

• Bowel and bladder management

• Learning to use the paralyzed arm and leg

• Balance training

• Walking

• Thinking and memory

• Swallowing therapy

• Prescription and training walkers and other helpful devices (splints and braces)

• Going out into the community to practice shopping, banking and driving

Patient care is delivered using a team approach. The Rehabilitation Team consists of the patient, the patient's family, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy staff. We work together to help you become as independent as possible.
