Evaluation, Treatment and Results
Setting Up an Appointment
Upon referral (either physician or self referral), a staff person from the Sleep Disorder Center will contact you to set up your appointments. You should request that your personal physician forward your medical history and provide any information available about your sleep-wake problems. This may save you time and expense. You will receive a questionnaire and informational packet to complete at home so the staff can evaluate your sleeping or waking history.
Sleep Evaluation
You may need to spend one or two nights at the center for recordings (called polysomnograms). Private recording rooms are used for these studies. Each room has sophisticated equipment for monitoring sleep patterns, breathing, heart activity, blood oxygen concentrations and body movements throughout the night.
The evaluation costs will vary according to necessary test procedures. Additional costs will occur if more than a single visit is required. Laboratory testing such as an overnight sleep study is a significant expense. We recommend that you discuss the costs for your testing with us. Most tests are covered by insurance, but companies do vary in their reimbursement policies.
Evaluation Results & Treatment Plan
Your case and records will be reviewed by the sleep physician. An appointment with this physician may be necessary so you can learn the results of your tests and discuss treatment alternatives with the sleep physician. A written report will be sent to your family physician and will include a summary of all the findings as well as a diagnosis and treatment recommendation.
